Montessori: Exploring Mathematics
Children in our school are introduced to maths through singing number songs, playing number games, counting and every day language. When a child is ready they are introduced to cut-out sandpaper numerals from zero to nine mounted on painted wooden boards. The child learns the shapes of the symbols using his senses as he feels the rough sandpaper and simultaneously absorbs its appearance and its name as he listens to the teacher saying each numeral aloud. The child then experiences objects that help correspond quantity to symbol, this is through the use of the spindle box and golden beads. The child is free to explore the mathematics material at his own pace, without pressure. The materials are designed with their own ‘control of error’ so the child is always able to assess his own progress.
